“A person should feed his or her animal before eating.”(Talmud, Berakhot 40a)

Being Kind to Animals

Tza-ar Ba-alei Hayim

Our tradition regards the life of all of God’s creatures – animals included - as precious.  This mitzvah, literally “compassion for the pain of living creatures,” teaches us that people must treat their animals humanely and prevent or minimize their suffering.

Athena’s Gourmet Doggie Biscuits

¾ cup hot water

1/3 cup margarine

½ cup powdered milk

3 cups whole wheat flour

½ tsp salt

2 tsp sugar

1 egg, beaten

In large bowl, pour hot water over margarine.  Stir in powdered milk, salt, sugar, and egg.  Add flour, ½ cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.  Knead 4-5 minutes, adding more flour, if necessary, to make a very stiff dough.  Pat or roll to ¼ inch thickness, and cut out with cookie cutter. Place on greased baking sheet (or line cookie sheet with parchment paper) and bake 45 minutes at 325 degrees.  Allow to cool completely.
